Barb Suttie - Blog

My first post
I work in oils and am a landscape oil painter and I use acrylics at times. My canvas becomes my palette. My paintings can have detailed brushwork and also less busy areas.
I am renowned for painting Mt Warning which is also named Wollumbin or Cloud Catcher. It was recently announced that Mt Warning and the surrounding Caldera is now listed as one of Australia's 8 icons - a must see for visitors and locals. It has been renamed "Australia's Green Cauldron". I am continually inspired by the many facets of this beautiful, natural form.
As a painter I am powerfully drawn to the landscape as a place of calmness and serenity. It is a kind of anchor in an intense, personal, social world. I attempt to embrace the power of nature itself and its timelessness but also find a part where its abstraction resonates with my own search for meaning.

Here I exagerate the unique Australian light in the work and in doing so the landscape moves from a representational of a specific place to a generic kind of meditative image.
